Scanning Probes

There is a lot of buzz in the metrology equipment industry regarding scanning. Here is what it can do for you:

• Fast and accurate measurement of elements: cylinder, cone, plane line, providing accurate form detail.
• Two sensors in one, both scanning and touch trigger. Giving the best of both worlds.
• They can be mounted on an articulating head, giving increased versatility in accessing hard to reach features without a loss of precision.
• Increased precision due to the utilization of isolated optical metrology, both in touch trigger and scanning mode.

Scanning probes also have the increased capability of carrying extremely long styli: 400 mm on Renishaw and 800 mm on Leitz probe heads. This enables the scanning probe to reach down extremely long bores and to give high accurate form readings.

However, scanning probes aren’t for everyone. There are some small disadvantages: They are more expensive than a touch probe, they are not as rugged and if you are looking for coordinates and don’t wish to explore form, then in many cases a tactile probe gives you superior results.
