Frequently Asked Questions

What is a bridge CMM?

A Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) where the basic structure resembles a bridge, with a horizontal beam supported by two vertical columns, allowing the probe to move across a table to measure the dimensions of a part by moving along the X, Y, and Z axes.

What is the difference between gantry and bridge CMM?

In a bridge machine, all three axes of the system move together independently of the reference plate, whereas in a gantry, just the X and Z axes move. The y-axis or the long axis is usually a stationary beam supported by pillars.

How does the Micron II handle varying temperatures in the factory setting?

The Micron II is particularly resistant to temperature fluctuations, either in the lab or on the shop floor, because all three axes are granite. Granite is the ideal material for a coordinate measuring machine because its coefficient of expansion is almost four times lower than that of aluminium. Aluminium reaches thermal equilibrium in as much as 12 hours, whereas granite’s response can be measured in seconds.

Is the Micron II compatible with my existing measurement software and systems?

The Micron is very compatible and likely superior to your existing CMMs. Its accuracy and speed are among the best. With the addition of the Chameleon controller, Micron II will run the software of your choice.

What are the maintenance requirements for the Micron II, and can my team perform routine upkeep?

Because granite is stable, the maintenance requirements are generally lower than comparable measuring machines and deviate very little during the annual calibration time. The user can perform routine maintenance of the equipment. Upon installation of the equipment, our service team instructs the operator on how to keep the machine in tip-top condition.

How much floor space does the Micron II require, and are different sizes available?

Every one of Micron II machines takes up less floor space than other CMMs of similar sizes. The Z height of the machine is generally lower than comparable equipment because of our triangular bridge configuration, which lowers the dynamic centre of gravity. Different sizes are available upon request.

Can the Micron II support different probing configurations for complex part measurements?

We support all Renishaw three-axis and five-axis systems, both tactile and scanning. In addition to the scanners, surface roughness, ultrasonic systems, and optical configurations are available.

How does the high-speed capability of the Micron II affect productivity on large measurement projects?

With the addition of five-axis probing combined with Micron’s high speed, we can measure between 4 and 6 times faster than conventional three-axis machines. This means more parts inspected, better process monitoring, and improved production quality.

What is the typical lifespan of the Micron II, and are there options for upgrading over time?

The base machine can last up to 35 years. During that time, electronics probing and software may be installed on it. Because the Micron II is completely modular, it can be upgraded or modified anytime.

How quickly can my staff learn to operate the Micron II, and is training provided?

Training is provided on all Micron II machines, irrespective of software choice.  We offer three training possibilities:

  1. Online courses.
  2. Classroom training is offered either at our facility or at your plant.
  3. E-learning videos (PC-DMIS or CMM Manager currently).

All software products we provide are very intuitive and easily learned.

We offer part programming services to kickstart your inspection productivity.

What kind of support does CMMXYZ offer post-installation for troubleshooting and optimization?

We offer 2 levels of support :

  1. Mechanical and electronics support: When the system fails mechanically or electronically, we can offer Internet-based support to diagnose the issues based on the error messages sent to the measurement system computer. We can also offer on-site service, where a skilled technician is dispatched.
  2. Software support: We offer a 12-month warranty on new software systems during this warranty. An applications engineer is standing by to answer any questions regarding the software's performance by telephone or Internet. Under certain circumstances, we can take over your measurement software, look for potential issues, and correct them if necessary. We also offer software support packages for used software products available on our pre-owned machines.
